Oolong is a tea category with oxidation/fermentation levels that fall between black and green teas, producing a unique flavor and health profile. Once the leaves are dried and oxidized, they are typically rolled or twisted into shape. Due to the varying levels of oxidation and roasting, oolong possesses a wide range of aromas and flavors.
A Brief History:
Oolong is a traditional Chinese tea that traces back to the mountainous Fujian region. The word "oolong" means "black dragon," possibly getting its name from the leaves' twisted shape. Depending on the type of oolong, the leaves will undergo roasting and bruising to release different aromas and flavors from the leaves.
Oolong is full of trace minerals our bodies need, including notable levels of magnesium, manganese, sodium, and potassium. In addition to nutrition, oolong tea is rich in antioxidants known as polyphenols. While both black and green tea also contain antioxidants, some research indicates that oolong may have more potent antioxidant properties out of the three. Additionally, one cup of oolong (8oz) contains 37 milligrams of caffeine.
